The information in the Cultural Inventory (KE) is compiled from books, articles, online sources, and the editors’ own knowledge; sources are cited for information obtained from external sources. There are no restrictions on the use of this content, provided that sources are cited.
The visual archive, on the other hand, is primarily built up through the editors uploading their own photographs. In addition, photographs contributed by others for inclusion on the site are sent to us by the individuals concerned and added to the site. Archival photographs are added to the site from old photo archive websites if the licensing terms permit, and the source link is always cited.
For every image in the Cultural Inventory (KE) that is not sourced from an external source, the copyright holder of the image is specified. The copyrights to photos uploaded to the KE by editors or individuals remain with them, and the KE holds only the right to use and display them on the website or on social media accounts for the purpose of promoting the site.
Use for Academic Purposes
Any text or media element published in the Cultural Inventory may be used without permission for educational purposes—such as academic research articles, lecture notes, and assignments—provided the source and link are cited.
Use in Books and Commercial Publications
If you wish to use a photograph published on KE in any material to be published or released to the public (including academic publications), you must obtain permission from the photograph’s owner. You can send a message to KE’s contact email address, specifying where you intend to publish it, the photograph you wish to use, and its link. Depending on the usage, you may be required to pay a royalty.
Use on Websites and Social Media
Non-commercial websites and social media accounts that do not generate revenue from their activities may use photographs from the Cultural Inventory provided they include the direct link to the relevant page on the Cultural Inventory, the name of the photograph’s owner, and a statement indicating that the photograph was obtained from the Cultural Inventory.
