Karaköy Transit Tram Stop

Akın Kurtoğlu

A photo taken after June 1, 1930. There are no toll booth attendants at the bridgehead; passage is now free. The rectangular roof on our right is the Karaköy tram transfer station. From here, it’s possible to reach the city’s northern neighborhoods—Maçka, Kurtuluş, Şişli, and Harbiye—as well as Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, and Bebek along the Bosphorus coast, all in a single trip. On the left is a minibus stop. It’s still quite new since Şehremanti granted permits for these vehicles. If you’re willing to share the ride with four other people, you can travel comfortably in leather seats to many destinations for a reasonable fare. Here’s another alternative… I suspect the Merzifonlu Karamustafapaşa Mosque, which stands where this photo was taken, still has about twenty years left before its numbered bricks are dismantled.
