The fortress has undergone various phases throughout history. After the Roman conquest of Galatia in the early 2nd century BCE, the city expanded beyond the fortress walls. Roman Emperor Caracalla repaired the castle’s walls in AD 217. Between AD 222 and 260, after Emperor Alexander Severus was defeated by the Persians, the castle was partially destroyed. Subsequently, during the Byzantine period, the walls of the inner castle were constructed.
