This section was added to the inner citadel by Byzantine Emperor Justinian II in A.D. 668. It was constructed because the city’s defenses were insufficient against Sasanian raids. Unlike the inner citadel, the towers in this section are square in shape, and there is less stratification across different periods within the towers. Structurally, the walls date almost entirely to a single period. The walls extend from Tabakhane to Samanpazarı.
