The National Theater of Sarajevo building was constructed in 1897–1898 according to a design by architect Karel Pařík, during the Austro-Hungarian era. Originally designed as a community center, the building was officially opened on January 2, 1899. The National Theater institution was established in 1919; after the building was renovated, it began operating as a theater in 1921.
