The work is believed to have been created before the year H. 673/M. 1274. According to Mevlevi sources, the patron of the structure was Cemel Ali Dede, a native of Maveraünnehir who served as a tutor to Hazrat Mevlana. As a child, he used to imitate a camel to make Mevlana laugh; his nickname “Cemel” comes from this.
The mosque was repaired in H.1311/M.1893 at a cost of 86,700 kuruş. The structure was restored in 1961 by the Konya Association of Lovers of Historical Monuments. Having undergone further repairs in recent years, the building is currently open for worship.
It is a square-plan structure. The mosque is entered through the northern door. It features a simple mihrab, believed to be newly constructed, made of carved marble and bearing a band of Quranic verses. The dome’s vaulting system is built of brick. It also has a wooden minbar. To reach the mosque from the mausoleum, one passes through two arched passages. The interior, which is entirely covered in plaster, contains reused column bases. 1
