“Köşek” means “a camel calf up to one year old” in Turkish. The name of the village of Köşektaş does not derive from the name of a tribe or a person, but rather from a folk legend based on two rock formations located to the north of the village.
According to legend, the area where the village stands today was once a green meadow dotted with springs where caravans used to camp. One day, a camel and its calf from a caravan camping there ran away. Unable to catch them, the owner cursed them, saying, “May you turn to stone right where you stand!” Following these words, the camel turned into a large boulder, and its calf into a round stone.
This legend has been passed down among the people over time, and the village began to be known as Köşektaş, taking its name from these “camel” and “calf” stones.
