It was built in 1316 as the palace of the Genoese ruler Montani de Marinis. It is the oldest known residence in Istanbul. Half of the palace was demolished during the widening of the street to allow horse-drawn trams to pass through Voyvoda Street in the 1880s. The front of today's building was added in the 19th century.
