Although there is not much information about him, his name is reported as "Abdullah" in various sources. According to some narrations, he is known as "Imam Abdullah Efendi" because he came to the conquest of Istanbul with Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan and served as the imam of the army. He was one of the sheikhs of the Qadiri Order. He received a madrasah education and was also raised by receiving inspiration from important saints of the period.
Where Does the Name “Telli Baba” Come From?
There are many different stories about the name. The most well-known one, and the one told by the people who worked here, is that during the time Telli Baba lived, there were many Greeks living around Sarıyer. This noble person, who invited the Greeks to Islam and made Muslim men and girls into brides with wire veils, began to be called "Telli Baba" among the people.
Another narration is that Telli Baba, who was a member of the Qadiri Order, wore a piece of tinsel on his turban. For this reason, he was called "Telli Baba" by his disciples and the public.
How Did Telli Baba Tomb Come to Being?
It is not known exactly when and how it emerged. However, there is a common belief among the people about its discovery. According to this belief, Telli Baba came to a sick girl's dream one night and told her where his grave was. This young girl visited the tomb and recovered from her illness. Afterwards, she applied to the necessary places and was instrumental in the discovery of the tomb and its opening to visitors.
Features of Telli Baba Tomb
It has a different structure compared to other tombs we have seen. The entrance is through a small narrow door. Inside there is a coffin and a small room where prayers can be performed. In this room there is a small window opening onto the Bosphorus.
