According to İbrahim Hakkı Konyalı, the fountain located next to the Vaniköy Mosque—which was commissioned by Vanî Mehmed Efendi—was demolished in 1941. Konyalı also states that he saw the fountain’s basin resting against the mosque wall. It is known that a new fountain was built along the roadside behind the mosque in 1975, and that the inscription on it, written in Latin letters, reads: “For many times, many years, many / A long time, as the people come and go / Along your path / Just as this property came to us, hand to hand / And just as it was, passing into other hands / To those who pay attention, it flows like a drop into the ocean / (H.1393–M.1975).”1
This fountain was demolished in 1980, and in its place, the Süleyman Bey Fountain—which still stands today—was built. The inscription on this fountain reads: “The water of this fountain flows for the sake of charity / It is a charitable deed of Süleyman Bey in the village of Vani / So said Sertoğlu Mithat, recording this date / Süleyman Bey built a new fountain—give thanks, O Lord.”2
