Perinthos Ancient Theatre
- Type: ancient theater
- Culture: Ancient Greek
- Region: Turkey, Marmara Region, Tekirdag, Marmaraereğlisi
- Situation: Accessible
The cavea of the theatre is 140 m in diameter and semicircular. The ancient Greek style semicircular cavea of the theatre is located on a slope overlooking the southern shore of Mola Cape, overlooking the sea.
Although there is no definitive evidence on this subject, the theater structure must have undergone some additions and renovations during the Roman period (Asgari 1982, 6).
Some of the theater’s seating and stones were later used in the construction of docks in Istanbul in the 1890s and, according to some sources, in the construction of the nearby Çorlu State Hospital in 1932 (Asgari 1982, 5). However, according to the testimony of the Italian traveler Ciriaco of Ancona, who visited the city in 1444, the stones of the theater’s seating were removed even then, and he describes this situation as follows:Surprisingly, almost no traces of this large and well-known amphitheatre remain, except for a large extension of the wall and numerous old vaults and arches, which the ancient inhabitants of the city confirmed as belonging to the same structure.. "(Ciriaco d'Ancona 2003, 61).
The present state of the structure is very close to the descriptions of Ciriaco of Ancona, who stated that he saw no traces of it except for a fragment of a wall and a few arches and vaults. This testimony indicates that more than five hundred and fifty years ago the ancient theatre was an empty space, the rows of seats and the stones of the stage structure having been removed.
