The Sarajevo Academy of Music was originally built in 1893 as the St. Augustine Institute for the Catholic women’s religious order known as the Daughters of Divine Love. The building was designed by architect Josip Vancaš and expanded in 1905. Initially, the institute operated a kindergarten, an elementary school, and a girls’ school, primarily serving the children of German-speaking families in Sarajevo.

The Sarajevo Academy of Music was founded in 1955 and began using this historic building that same year. The Academy notes that the building sustained severe damage on several occasions during the Bosnian War. Today, the building is used by the Academy of Music at the University of Sarajevo.
