Dendil, a former Armenian village, is a settlement that was once home to a significant Armenian population. In the Hrant Dink Foundation’s “Inventory of Armenian Cultural Assets in Sivas,” the structure in Dendil is listed as “Surp Asdvadzadzin” (Սուրբ Աստվածածին). Its Turkish equivalent roughly translates to “Holy Mother of God / Saint Theotokos.”
In the inventory, this structure is listed as building No. 095. After the land on which the Surp Asdvadzadzin Church in Dendil stood became private property, a house was built on top of its ruins using stones from the church. An examination of the surrounding houses reveals that stones from the church were used as salvaged materials in their construction.
