Construction of the madrasa, which is now used as the Museum of Turkish-Islamic Arts, was begun in 1414 by Sultan Çelebi Mehmet; although it could not be completed as planned due to the sultan’s death in 1421, it was opened to the public in 1424. For a time, it served as the Bursa Branch of the Imperial Museum. It is also known as the Sultaniye Madrasa.
As of 2020, restoration work has been completed, and the building has been reopened to the public.
